So strange I can’t help but convey my recent experience picking up a pizza I had ordered over the phone for carry out at the only Domino’s Pizza in Columbus, Mississippi.

So, I make the mistake of ordering a XFX 6600GT AGP card. Monarch’s happy to take my cash, even though I later learn that at least one of the support representatives there is familiar with how often they’re RMA’d. That card shows up and is, of course, dead. For $6 I send it back for a replacement. That XFX 6600GT is dead on arrival, too. I send that back for $7 for a store credit.

Every semester, never fails. I’m about ready to stop going. For the price of a single bagel without creamcheese at Einstein I can buy two larger, more imaginative, better tasting bagels from Panera Bread on the way to work. It now costs me $1.38 for a single bagel. It’s less than a buck at Panera.

That’s what I was reminded of, this morning, hungry and tired from arising early to park on campus, when I went up stairs and discovered a plentiful bounty of fruit, orange juice, and doughnuts for waiting students seeking guidance from the building’s only counselor. I snagged some cool, fresh orange juice, then some pineapple and honeydew slices and consumed them, slowly. Finally, I snagged a few doughnuts on the way back downstairs.

Although somewhat cheaper, you get what you pay for. I’ve seen numerous posts where people complain XFX is simply getting a bad rap and little first hand information about the quality of their cards exists. Well, here it is.

That’s pretty sad. Most forums just kick your password back at you via email and leave you alone.

Rarely do I rent DVDs. This evening I had the distinct misfortune of renting a DVD from Blockbuster. I obtained a copy of Hutch, which had many copies available despite being prominently displayed in the new releases section, immediately visible when you enter the store. After paying just over $5, I brought a copy home. Not thinking much of it, as I treat my DVDs with care, I failed to notice the horrendous quantity of scratches on the play surface of the DVD.

Updating a Windows XP Home box on dialup, I find myself wading through the nonsense that is Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage. Before I can actually apply any security updates to this Dell OEM’d copy of XP Home, I have to download an initial Genuine Advantage package. Once installed, after ten minutes of downloading and installing, Micosoft explains it needs to validate my already valid copy of Windows XP. Great. Having no choice but to continue, lest my box become a compromised host, abusing the Internet at dialup speeds, I proceed. More data is sent to Microsoft and I wait, wait, and wait for a while longer. Another five minutes pass.
