Of late I have been working on a campaign file processor in Perl so I can redefine the convoys in Silent Hunter 3 to be far more realistic in composition. With the tool essentially finished, I have begun research into convoys during War War II.

So far, it’s been intriguing reading. A piece I found especially thoughtful is written by John Beardmore, who served aboard the H.M.S. Poppy, a British Royal Navy Corvette during its escort of the convoy PQ17, which met a seriously illgotten fate due to unfortunate orders to the escort force and convoy to disperse. The Germans sunk most of the convoy thereafter.

H.M.S. Poppy and Convoy PQ17.
