The recommended storage interface for dspam is MySQL, and after dealing with RedHat specific problems revolving around SleepyCat’s db4, I am not at all surprised. (More on that later if you encounter the same issue.) The simplest part, by contrast, is actually compiling the software and configuring Sendmail to call procmail such that dspam obtains the information it needs to run happily.

I found some useful guides on using a USB flash card reader under Linux. I had already compiled the modules in case I ever needed them, so I merely had to stick my flash card in. My reader supports four types, but I didn’t enable SCSI support to probe multiple LUNs, so only the first is visible. Fortunately, it’s also my FC reader, so I’m good. I can’t imagine I’ll ever need to read SDs.

I was happy to learn that the Xterasys card uses the TI ACX111 chipset, which is already supported by NdisWrapper. (There is also experimental support using the ACX100 project’s native Linux driver.) In fact, for Debian systems, it merely entails adding a single line to /etc/apt/sources.list. Once that’s complete, apt-get update and apt-get install ndiswrapper ndiswrapper-source to get started. The latter will get you the sources you need to patch your kernel with for a recompile and stick it in /usr/src.

Once again, it’s time to reinstall Windows. Oops, I forgot it can’t deal with multiple controllers intelligently. Time to unplug the USB card reader it sees as a SCSI device and the SCSI disk drive. Reboot. Let’s try again. So sad. I never have to worry about hardware configuration changes owning Linux. And then, on with formatting our NTFS partition. Let’s forget that modern disk controllers deal with bad sectors intelligently and let’s instead actually read test every sector on the disk…

It seems to be working, now. I moved some PCI cards around. Unsurprisingly, Linux worked fine throughout the entire ordeal. I should have 40GB x 2 RAID 1 once everything is complete. Sadly I seem to have run out of room in this midtower case. 1.5′ ATA cables really get messy when they need only run about 6″.

So, here I am installing a 3Ware Escalade 6200 in my workstation. A simple procedure, right? I wish. Once Windows 2000 SP4 finally installed, explorer.exe immediately crashed on boot. No clue why. It’s just magically not working. Lovely, now msdtc.exe is experiencing a illegal instruction during reinstallation. Something’s toast.

With Office Depot offering a $50 mail-in rebate, I finally bought a digital camera. I picked up the Canon PowerShot A60 this evening. It’s an impressive little device which comes with a surprisingly extensive amount of documentation.

I recently picked up the DI-524 from Fry’s Outpost.com for about $40 after a $20 mail-in rebate. Considering 11b equipment with similar functionality is going for basement prices of $20, on the surface it seems to be a reasonable deal. I was only interested in the 11g functionality, and do not intend to use the router functionality at all. (It’s a shame no one is interested in APs. I would have bought a regular AP had they been available this cheap.)

MT is whacking out on me. With so much unhappiness surrounding the most recent release of MT, I’m going to move to something else, possibly WordPress, soon.
